JOB TITLE: B Shift Manufacturing Supervisor

REPORTING TO: Sr. Manufacturing Manager

LOCATION: West Henrietta, NY


These positions may require lawful access to ITAR/EAR controlled information and employees in this role will need to meet those requirements. Requirements include US Citizenship or US Permanent Resident.

Who is IDEX Health & Science (IH&S)?

IDEX Health & Science, Life Science Optics – based in Rochester, New York –IDEX Health & Science’s line of products is comprised of a Light Sources Group and an Optical Systems Group. The Light Sources Group manufactures a variety of visible, low to moderate power lasers and laser-based systems uniquely designed for consistent performance. The Light Sources Group offers three basic types of lasers: gas (helium-neon and ion lasers), diode-pumped solid-state (DPSS) lasers, and semiconductor diode laser assemblies. The Optical Systems Group provides the design, prototype and low to mid volume manufacturing of custom lens assemblies and optical systems. The Optical Systems Group also specializes in the design of reliable shutter mechanisms and assemblies.

Assist the Production Manager responsible for the operation of an assigned area in terms of production, quality, cost, delivery, technical, safety, and human resources, while respecting the defined goals. Responsible for the day-to-day management of people within production, to ensure company's targets and objectives are met to meet customer requirements, ensuring that staff comply with health, safety and standard operating procedures. Strive to continually improve using Lean tools to reduce costs, improve production and quality. Act with minimum supervision. Decisions and results have an impact on the function and their success. Performance affects the function’s image. The primary purpose of the B Shift Manufacturing Supervisor position is to provide supervision of all functions of the Manufacturing, Materials and Facility Maintenance activities for B shift.


  • Lead by example, ensuring a safe and efficient workplace is maintained at all times

  • Achieve the required company quality standards ensuring both internal and external customer satisfaction

  • Ensuring that Key Performance Indicators (KPI's) are monitored, and targets achieved

  • Coordinate with support functions to progress issues concerning production planning and resource/skill allocation to ensure delivery of products to schedule within all relevant quality specifications

  • Communicate with the teams by utilizing daily management (DMM) with focus on quality, cost and delivery, and gathering ideas for improvement

  • Drive performance of team members, giving direction and feedback to aid good performance

  • Ensure safe working practices are maintained and ‘Standard Operations’ adhered to

  • Ensure that non-conformance is challenged, and countermeasures are agreed and implemented

  • Motivate the team to create a high-performance culture where improvement suggestions are embraced

  • Through the utilization of lean manufacturing techniques, strive to exceed the Company targets in productivity, efficiency and quality on a continuous basis

  • Support the implementation of engineering changes and product development

  • Report and act upon plant or machinery breakdowns to maintenance technicians

  • Contribute in the improvement of working procedures by constantly looking for solutions to ensure the best productivity results of her/his machinery group and ensuring compliance with procedures, operating instructions, and work instructions

  • Ensure that internal delivery processes are adhered to through monitoring of cycle times

  • Identify and eliminate root cause using robust countermeasures. Sustain the corrective actions to eliminate repeat issues

  • Ensure all external and internal auditory standards and improvement requirements are met

  • This job position requires compliance with ITAR Regulations. Therefore, all employees working in this capacity must meet citizenship status. Per the IDEX H&S Export Controls Policy and Procedure, the employee must be a U.S. Citizen or a U.S. Permanent Resident


  • Supervise and control resource effectively to support customer delivery requirements and Lean Manufacturing principles

  • Monitor and maintain company Absence policy to ensure maximum attendance levels

  • Deal with personnel issues on shift by completing timely investigations and/or sit downs and summarize the events that occurred and send to Manager and HR

  • Responsible for coordination of training of operators and executing training check-ins

  • Conduct incident, accident and non-conformity investigations and associated reporting and action closure

  • Monitor the completion of tasks and ensure good performance and record on appropriate systems

  • Consistently promote high standards through personal example and roll out through the team so that each member of the team understands the standards and behaviors expected of them

  • The following departments are Supervised by this position: Coatings, Finishing & Systems Departments


  • Coordinate and communicate with other departments and ensure an effective interface is maintained

  • Provide feedback to the Management team to share ideas and improve operation, recommending, supporting and implementing continuous improvement activities and process and procedure improvements to optimize results and improve the quality of delivery

  • Provide technical expertise to the team


  • Support, comply and ensure complicity with Health & Safety regulations, Quality and Environmental standards, and all other Company policies and procedures

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent; or 6 years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience is preferred.

  • Strong interpersonal skills with ability to lead, including influential leadership

  • Demonstrated ability to achieve results in a cooperative, cross-functional, participative (e.g., matrix) environment

  • Lean six sigma knowledge expertise is highly desired


  • Ability to sustain and develop team working and team-based problem solving

  • High level of numerical, analytical and problem-solving skills

  • Able to achieve results by setting high standards and committing to clear objectives

  • Adaptable to change and varying situations, ability to show resilience and a flexible approach

  • Excellent communication skills

  • Computer literate with good numeric skills

  • Full understanding of customer expectations and deliverables with an awareness of the impact of failure/cost of poor quality

  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables

  • Good ability to use PC & ERP tools for communication, data extraction, and analysis. JDE knowledge a plus

  • Ability to work with MS Word, PowerPoint, MS Office

  • Familiarity with terminology as it relates to the optics industry

  • This position is a site-based role
