The Punch Press Operator sets up and operates all punch presses that automatically / manually feed bars, structural metal, blanks or continuous roll of steel into die set.

REPORTING TO : Production Supervisor


  • Installs specified dies in punch press with the use of material handling equipment.

  • Loads coils of steel ranging from 20 lbs. to 400 lbs. with the availability of an overhead crane.

  • Threads metal strip from play out reel through pinch rollers.

  • Positions and clamps feed guides.

  • Turns knobs or cams to synchronize action of the ram with the pinch rollers to feed material to the proper length.

  • Adjusts ram stroke of press to desired specifications.

  • Sets up automatic load monitoring equipment and adjusts to specifications.

  • Operates machine to crimp, punch and cut metal according to specifications.

  • Performs in-process inspections as detailed in Quality Control Plans.

  • Delivers sample parts to Quality Assurance Department for approval.

  • Performs periodic inspection of pars produced to insure adherence to specifications.

  • Makes adjustments to punch press as required.

  • Runs multiple machines as required.

  • Assists in troubleshooting problems with dies.

  • Participates in the continuous improvement process by attending meetings and presenting problems and possible solutions to the appropriate personnel.

  • Ability to set up and troubleshoot progressive dies.

  • Knowledge of the use of measuring instruments for inspection purposes, i.e. calipers, micrometers, etc.

  • Mechanical background and/or aptitude.

  • Must complete confined entry training within 60 days.

  • Ability to read blueprints.

  • Must provide or purchase adequate tools to perform the job.


2 years machine operation experience preferred

High School Diploma or GED

Essential Functions:

Physical Demands:

  • Time divided between standing and walking.

  • Lifting requirements range from less than 10 lbs. up to 400 lbs. Manual lifting could reach to company maximum of 65 lbs. Material handling equipment is available for heavy lifting.

Work Environment:

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee works near moving, mechanical parts approximately 90% of the time.

  • There is exposure to loud noise approximately 90% of the time. Ear protection is furnished and mandatory.

  • There is exposure to vibration at least 60% of the day.

Mental/Visual Demands:

  • Close vision is necessary for parts inspection.

  • Peripheral vision is necessary to monitor both the die and the feeder.

  • Distance vision is necessary to monitor more than one machine at a time.

  • Close listening skills to hear variations in machine noise to alert operator of a problem.

  • Must be constantly alert to machine operation.

  • The estimated compensation for this position is $22.75 - $31.39 per hour

  • This position may be eligible for an $1000.00 sign on bonus

  • This position may be eligible for a business unit bonus annually
